British Royalty hit the headlines this week. However, rather than a family member, it was a break-in at Buckingham Palace which made the headlines. As images of the Palace dominated the news, it dawned on me just how dirty and rough looking the exterior is. Isn’t it about time Buckingham Palace got a whitewash?
Buckingham Palace is one of the main tourists attraction’s in the UK, yet from the outside, strip the fancy gates and the grounds, it just looks like some old shabby building. According to the National Audit Office (UK), the Royal Family’s accommodation for seven homes, cost British taxpayers, an average £11.9m per year. In 2000, £650,000 was spent on repairs to a “palace exterior”. I’m guessing it wasn’t Buckingham Palace.
Whitewash paint is cheap and durable so I’m sure it wouldn’t hurt the Winsdors’ nor deny any of them a holiday if they dipped in the money pot to preserve and brighten up the Palace. Maybe the wages spent on security (which failed them badly this week) should be transferred to the Palace upkeep so that the tourists who travel far and wide, all over the world can have better pictures to show their friends and families back home.
Compared to France’s Palace of Versailles (above) and the US White House (below), Buckingham Palace looks ‘council estate‘. Its a bloody embarrassment and an expensive disappointment for tourists.
