Today, July 11th, is the birthday of Kimberly Denise Jones aka, Lil’ Kim, Queen Bee who turns 38. Lil Kim was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY and didn’t have the best of a family life growing up. Her love for rapping and meeting Christopher Wallace, aka, The Notorious B.I.G. propelled her into a high celebrity status. As a member of Junior M.A.F.I.A. Kim stood out as the only female member with her ability to rhyme as hard and as dirty as her male counterparts.
In 1996, after the death of B.I.G. Lil’ Kim released her debut album, Hardcore which featured hits “No Time” and “Crush On You”. This album gave her props for her writing skills as well as her rapping skills as many critics had thought of her as B.I.G.’s ‘puppet’ before his death. At the height of her career, Kim was modelling for labels such as Versace and Baby Phat, and was second only to fellow rapper, Missy Elliot in the female rap game. Following albums, The Notorious K.I.M. (2000) and La Bella Mafia (2003) kept her floating that ship.
During a spell incarcerated for conspiracy charges in 2005, Kim released The Naked Truth which didn’t sell as well as her previous albums but still received great reviews. In 2007, Kim took part as a celebrity judge in Pussycat Dolls Present: The Search For The Next Doll and Pussycat Dolls Present: Girlicious in 2008. In 2009 she appeared on Dancing With The Stars, finishing in fifth place.
The release of her fifth studio album has been halted due to “production issues” but after kicking off her ‘Return Of The Queen Tour’ in May this year it looks like the Queen will be soon giving ‘hot thang’ of the moment, Niki Minaj a run for her money in the charts.
Have a great birthday Lil’ Kim.
